Recycling!

I am more than just a little excited to announce that my recycling can was dropped off today! Yes, curbside recycling has finally come to our little burb! It was initially slated to begin in January, but I am happy to learn that it will actually be starting next month!

Also, the program is more comprehensive than I thought it would be. It's nothing like Portland, mind you, but at least I can recycle all plastics 1-7! I imagined that it might be only 1 and 2 and maybe 7 or something if we were lucky!

Anyway, I am excited to be able to begin recycling once again (the private company that provided the drop-off bins to the city pulled them once they learned of the city's plans). I have quite a stockpile in my garage that I can't wait to begin unloading (although the recycling cans are skinnier than the trash cans, and they only pick up bi-weekly, so I may fill it up with new recycling and not even make a dent in the old)!

One less thing to feel guilty about! Hooray!

You can take the girl out of Oregon, but apparently, you can't take the Oregon out of the girl...

Wow. Commingled in one can? And *all* plastics 1-7? I'm assuming no bags, though, because those seriously screw up most recycling equipment. And I've never heard of anyone picking up block styrofoam, even though it's technically a #6.

You know what? Even with no bags or styrofoam, that's *better* than Portland. Curbside plastics here (and we only got commingled roll-carts last summer) are only bottles with necks and tubs over six ounces. Everything else (plus bags and film) I take to a quarterly plastics roundup.

You still have to put glass in a separate container, right?

No glass at all, but I can actually do bags (as long as they're bagged!)!, I can also do wire hangers tied up together, cans, cardboard, junk mail, office paper, cookware, small appliances, telephone books, wrapping paper.... the list goes on. I'm really pleasantly surprised! And, yes, commingled in one can! Amazing, huh? And all for only $3.05 a month!

well hey, the clock is set 20 years back in your state, so your recycling bins showed up right on time!

Our recycling sounds about the same. Our container is filled by us each week, but only picked up every 2 weeks. After a year of this, I decided to order a second recycling can, one for each week. They don't do glass because the closest processing facility is in CA, so they would have to transport it there. Waa.
